Make for Makoshika
Makoshika State Park (the biggest in the state) packs a potent mix: deep ravines, miles of trails, abundant wildlife, fossils, and even a disk golf course. Here, campers get culture: every summer, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks sends thee’and thou’s ringing off the natural amphitheater’s rock walls.
Makoshika isn't the only geologically hip hangout around. Smaller Terry Badlands boasts rock formations and the town of Terry: home to the (haunted) Kempton Hotel. Nearby, Glendive claims the best agate-hunting in the state and the Makoshika Dinosaur Museum. For more recent history, overnight an antique-strewn room at the plush Charley Montana B&B.
Down the road in Wibaux, geology mixes with theology in St. Peter’s Catholic Church’s impressive native stone walls. Clinch your trip with the town’s less pious pursuits: local microbrews at the Beaver Creek Brewery and chicken fried steak at the Shamrock Club.
