This was the smallest festival I have attended but one of my favorites! The people are great, the food was fantastic and the vendors. were friendly and local. Not to mention the sheep run, which was hilarious! I didn't count them for fear of falling asleep-but it was fun!
Reed Point Sheep Drive
Why You Should Visit
This was pretty funny. Don't expect high excitement, but if you enjoy seeing a town have a lot of fun over running a large herd of sheep through town it couldn't be better. It was conceived as a take off on the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. We enjoyed it tremendously. The first year it was done no one actually thought it would become an annual event but it was so much fun it has lasted.
I convinced my wife to pack up the kids (3 and 3 months) and make the drive from Bozeman for the Sheep Drive in 2011. It was well worth it, and surprisingly kid-friendly with a bunch of inflatable slides and things.
You can drink your beers in the street, which makes it a lot of fun. However, there is only one (maybe two) ATM in town and you'll need cash for most of the vendors, so be sure and bring plenty or be prepared to make the 15-minute drive to Columbus to refill your wallet (I did).
The actual running of the sheep was short but every bit as fun as we'd hoped. The rest of the day was one of the better festivals/street fairs we've been to. The live shootout show was different and very cool, and the street dance looked fun as we were dragging a tired 3-year-old back to the car.
Two pieces of advice: First, you don't have to follow the crowd and nervously park on the severe shoulder of the northbound exit ramp of I-90. There's plenty of parking in town. Second, bring chairs.
The Running of the Sheep in the tiny town of Reedpoint, MT is the perfect late summer event. See & hear it from start to finish...the sheep, the food & crafts, the music, live auction, parade, gun fighters, garage sales, chicken bingo, log sawing contest, street dance....Yee! Haw!
